Taxis are widely available, but always agree on a price and currency before setting off. Most drivers serve as both private taxi drivers and roadside collective taxis, picking up folks alongside the road on a particular route. It’s an inexpensive way to get around the island and it’s a great way to meet people. The downside is that apart from work hours it is sometimes a long wait for a ride.

Passport and Visa Requirements
US, Canadian and British citizens may enter Montserrat with proof of citizenship such as a driver's license. Visitors from all other nations must have valid passports and entry visas are required of citizens of Cuba and the Eastern Bloc Countries. A return ticket is required of all visitors.

TRANSPORTATION -- CAR RENTALS

Although car rentals are readily available and reasonably priced at about US $210/week you will have to obtain a Montserrat driving license. Throughout the Eastern Caribbean, the driving license has become a valuable source of governmental income. It has nothing to do with your driving competence; it is simply an added annoyance -- one that is unavoidable. Usually your car rental service will make it as painless as possible. The temporary license costs EC $50.

Commercial airline transportation to Montserrat currently originates in nearby Antigua an island which is served by international airlines including American Air, Air Canada, British Airways, BWIA International, and Continental.

Montserrat Airport
The airport in the northern part of the island is now operational, replacing the airport lost to the volcanic eruption of Soufriere Volcano in 1997. Weather permitting, WinAir or another area carrier flies into Montserrat usually every day with varying frequency and time schedules using very small airplanes sometimes carrying six passengers, sometimes more. You may also charter a private flight (see below for more information). Baggage on these small planes is limited and you will pay extra for excess baggage weight. Be sure to lock all of your luggage securely if it will be cared for by baggage handlers, even your carry-on baggage as that will be taken for storage at the back of the plane. Theft is very common.

One flight service was initiated a few years ago with British government funding. It will provide service between Montserrat and neighboring islands both on a scheduled service and as a charter service. Aside from funding from Britain, they are also offering stock in the new company. See their web site for more information: www.flymontserrat.com
