THINGS TO DO -- A PHOTOGRAPHIC TOUR

Lets Take a Tour of MontserratHELICOPTER TOUR OF THE ISLAND OF MONTSERRAT (2005)
Click on the link above to see some breathtaking views of this lovely island from a helicopter including photographs of the Soufriere Hills Volcano and Plymouth, Montserrat's former capitol city.

THINGS TO DO -- BIRD WATCHNG

Thirty four bird species are native to Montserrat and others visit on their migratory journeys. In a trek through the rain forest you may be lucky to see one of the now threatened Montserrat Orioles found only in Montserrat. Other birds to spot are the Forest Thrush, the Bridled Quail Dove, Mangrove Cuckoo, Trembler and the Purple Throated Carib.

In the drier north you may find the Red-billed Tropic bird, the mangrove Cuckoo and the Pearly-eyed Thrasher. On the eastern side of the island you will find a breeding colony of magnificent Frigate Birds.

THINGS TO DO -- HIKING

The Belham
Click the link above to see a pictorial of the hike in the Belham.

Cot Trail
Hiking this trail in the Centre Hills you will pass by a banana plantation and find the Cot, once the Sturge family’s summer cottage. This family played a significant role in Montserrat’s 19th century development. Walking just a bit further on, you will find great views of the coastline.

Centre Hills Trail
These hills run almost midway between the north and south of Montserrat. In this rain forest environment you will see some of the island's unusual birds, tree frogs, and maybe even the elusive "mountain chicken (click here! To see a picture of this chicken!)."

The Duberry Plantation
Click the link above to see a pictorial of the Ruins of the Duberry Plantation.

Little Bay to Rendevous Bay Trails
Here you have two choices, one trail is easy and takes longer (about 2 hours) while the other is strenuous and shorter. Either way you will get to Rendevous Bay where you will find the only tan sand beach on Montserrat. The water at Rendevous is turquoise and very Caribbean! Non hikers may hire a boat in Little Bay to be dropped off and picked up later.

Plymouth Tour (when Permitted) Click the link at the left to see photographs of Montserrat's former capitol city, Plymouth, after the repeated ash flows from the Soufriere Hills Volcano.

Runaway Ghaut (ravine) Trail
This is a short entirely downhill trail taking about 1 hour (walking slowly) to reach the sea. We live above this trail and felt as isolated there as if we were in a deep Caribbean forest. We never did figure out where our house was even though at some point it was just above us. It is a lovely trip though marred in places with trash that has been pitched over the side by workers at homes lining the edge of the ravine. On the main road above Runaway Ghaut there are parking and picnic facilities and a special spring fed water fountain. Island lore has it that if you have one taste of the water from this fountain, you will return to Montserrat again and again.

Silver Hills Trail
On the northern point of Montserrat, this trail leads to a now extinct volcano. This is the dry part of Montserrat andyou will see a very different type of wildlife and plant life than in the more southerly areas. Views of the coast are all that you could hope for.

VILLAGES

Salem
This tiny town lies on the western side of the island inland from and between the largely expatriate communities of Olde Towne and Olveston. It is lively with people at night and colorful in the day. Though many of the lovely traditional Montserrat homes have been lost to modernization, in Salem you can still see them, though most are in ill repair, homes now only for the economically disadvantaged. Still, boxy cement dwellings have not erased the wonderful character of Salem. Evenings, there are several local bars, each with a style all it's own -- some have pool tables and some sell groceries along with rum and cokes. Salem's many churches are a testament to it's longevity.
