Currently headed by Claude Browne, the co-op provides seeds, chemicals, sprayers and other agricultural products to its members at a reduced price. The membership fee is EC $60/year (about US $20) and everyone is welcome to join. Meetings are held monthly to discuss issues of concern to farmers and backyard gardeners. Supplies may be purchased on Tuesday or Thursday between 10:00 A.M. and 12:00 noon in St. Peters. Heading north pass the Riverside Bar on your left and take the next left (a dirt driveway). With a bit of luck on Tuesday you'll find Ellen Sweeney and on Thursday Violet West there to help you.

This is not a normal garden shop, but it offers prisoners a chance to be productive and to enjoy working on the land while they serve their sentences. For the consumer it is a great resource for reasonably priced plants, shrubs and trees. A year or so ago you might have even gotten some good gardening advice from a fellow named James "Chicken" Lewis who was "in" for some time. He has finished his sentence and may be looking for work; maybe you'll be needing a gardener.

Owners Comment: In 1990 one of Montserrat's expatriate residents brought me some gardening books and told me I have a talent in the garden. Not long after, she helped me get my first order of plants and supplies and since then most of my customers have found me by word of mouth. Call and come to visit anytime after 4:00 P.M. when you will always find me in the garden where I will give you a tour while we chat about gardening.

Norman's is the island's best source of fresh herbs for seasoning, teas and good health. Right now they have local thyme for tea and to replace your dried French thyme in all your favorite recipes. They also have Italian parsley and the delicious local basil. Soon there will be even more locally grown fresh herbs to choose from. All of these herbs are free of pesticides so you can give them a quick rinse and toss them in your salads, tea water, salad dressings and in all of your favorite recipes. Also, don't forget if you want the best powdered milk on the island -- Dairy Time. This is a great Irish product either whole or skimmed; you will not be disappointed.
