The Farmers Co-op
Headed by Claude Browne, the co-op provides seeds, chemicals, sprayers and other agricultural products to its members at a reduced price. The membership fee is EC $60/year and everyone is welcome to join. Meetings are held monthly where issues of concern to farmers are discussed. The Farmers Association Monthly Meeting takes place on the the last Tuesday at the Farmer's Resource Center (where you pick up your little seedlings -- just ask when you get there) To pick up your supplies from the Farmer's Association their warehouse is located at the Anglican Church Rectory in St. Peters. It is just as you pass the Riverside bar on the upper road to St. Peters. You will find Violet West working there on Tuesdays from 10:00 AM to 12:00PM. and you will find Ellen Sweeney there from 10:00AM to 12:00PM on Thursday. You do not have to be a commercial farmer to participate in this cooperative, and because most of the members are commercial farmers you can learn a lot since each year we face many unique problems which the commercial farmers have to solve for their lively hood depends on it. This is not a normal garden shop, but it offers prisoners a chance to be productive and to enjoy working on the land while they serve their sentences. For the consumer it is a great resource for reasonably priced plants, shrubs and trees. A year or so ago you might have even gotten some good gardening advice from a fellow named James "Chicken" Lewis who was "in" for some time. He has finished his sentence and may be looking for work; maybe you'll be needing a gardener.

Right now (March 2008) they have local thyme for tea and to replace your dried French thyme in all your favorite recipes. They also have Italian parsley and the delicious local basil. Soon there will be even more locally grown fresh herbs to choose from.
