Local Chicken on the Fly With MaPai

There are several small supermarkets in Montserrat and many roadside vegetable and fruit stands. Most of the food available is imported from the United States. Fresh local meats, beef, lamb, chicken, pork and goat are available. Surprisingly, fish, shellfish and lobster are rarely available unless bought frozen at a supermarket. The island's fishermen bring in catches of very small fish which we jokingly think of as suitable for aquariums. Local dishes once included the "mountain chicken" which you can see in the photograph to the right -- it is a large frog! These are now considered endangered and are no longer eaten in Montserrat. The other famous dish of the island is goat water stew, which is still widely available and still delicious.

Owner's Comment: When we were allowed back into Salem after the evacuation, my husband and I decided to start this small business working out of our home. We love our chickens and they produce the best eggs you'll find. Come try them.

Specialty: In Salem you will find my small roadside vegetable stand open normally on the weekends, but also for special orders if you give me a call. I grow all of my vegetables and provisions organically, using no commercial fertilizers or pesticides so they are especially healthy and delicious. Look for my stand on the right side of the road just a few feet from the Salem Town sign On any given day you may find such treats as green beans, pumpkin, corn, bananas, cucumbers, cristophene, dasheen, breadfruit, carrots and much more.

Fresh herbs for seasoning, teas and good health are now available every week at Norman's Supermarket. Stop by after noon on Friday or Saturday morning to get them at their best! Oriel Watts, local farmer pictured on the right, works land above the Vue Pointe Hotel. He enjoys the same beautiful view of the ocean their guests once did as he raises vegetables, pigs and sheep (The Vue Pointe Hotel is now closed). Oriel also provides services to other local farmers when their animals are ready for butchering. He is knowledgeable in his trade and serves both the local and foreign communities. Oriel has a wealth of knowledge about local agriculture which has proved invaluable to many of us as we adjust our gardening methods to a Caribbean environment.
