ECONOMY In
1996 the U.K. provided US $100 million for reconstruction and an additional
$100 million will be fully allocated for development through 2006. Prior
to the volcanic eruption the mainstay of the economy was agriculture--Sea
Island Cotton and fruit, especially limes. Small scale residential tourism
also brought in foreign currency. As a result of the volcanic activity
one hope for the economy is the export of sand and gravel.

The one secondary school is in Olveston.
ELECTRICITY
As a British colony, Montserrat has chosen to offer two options for electrical
services and appliances. Many homes have electrical outlets installed
in duplicate, one for 110 volts and one for 220.
