DIVING

Diving became a serious tourist attraction in Montserrat since the with the establishment of Sea Wolf Diving School formed by Inge and Wolf Krebs (1988). In 2003 Inge and Wolf sold Sea Wolf Diving which still operates under the same name. Below is and excerpt from Their original Web Site on Sea Wolf Diving.

Lightly populated even before the Soufriere eruption, Montserrat has been free of the polluting consequences of heavy development. Diving on the Atlantic west coast is for the strong expert as the ocean is active and powerful. The more sheltered west coast has ample opportunities for the novice to expert diver. Dives vary from 10 to 30 feet of depth near the cliffs where abundant brain, star, and pillar corals compete for space with sponges, sea fans, and sea plumes. At a depth of 40 to 50 feet, further from shore, undulating rocky ledges support large barrel sponges and larger examples of the coral seen at less depth closer to shore. In this zone small and large reef fish are plentiful and maybe a turtle will be spotted. Still further from shore on the island's shelf at a depth of 60 to 70 feet you will see the largest of the coral and sponge species. Stag horn coral, largest examples of the local corals and sponges, and the biggest fish add to the entertainment in this zone.

Volcanic activity since 1995 has had an effect on undersea life in the southern half of Montserrat. While adding to the islands land mass, Soufriere volcano has moved the edge of the sea outward changing the underwater terrain and the viability of the sea life in the affected area.
