CLIMATE

Temperature
August and September are the warmest months and January and February are the coolest. Temperatures vary only a little over 10 degrees between the summer and winter seasons, falling between 75 and 85 in the summer and 70 to 80 degrees in winter. The mean annual temperature is 79 degrees. Though the island is green most of the year, spring time brings what one would think of as fall in a northern climate. Leaves turn yellow and fall from the trees and it truly takes on the feel of autumn.

Rain
Rainfall averages 40 to 80 inches a year, with rainy season from September through February. The western or Caribbean side of the island and the mountains receive most of the rainfall.

Hurricanes
Hurricane season is June through October. Below are photographs taken during a close call with a hurricane during the 2008 season.

COSAS INSOLITOS OR STRANGE OCCURANCES!

Here in Montserrat like other places where there is time to reflect thanks to the few distractions present, we often see what we would call Cosas Insolitos or strange occurrences. This first one may surprise you as it did us. Hopefully, it will not offend; but it is a true occurrence. At 7:23 AM we did our garden walk as we customarily do each morning. We often count the blossoms on the flowering bush at the back side of the house, but this morning we were surprised to find two pigeons almost as if posed underneath. Have a look at the photographs below to see if you would classify this as one of our: COSAS INSOLITOS

Yes they are dead and we guess that their last moments seem to be concerned with each other, perhaps like we might be.

We were surprised as we always are when these beautiful pigeons sometimes fall out of the sky due to the effects poisons put out for rodents like rats or those used routinely in agriculture and in home gardens, like malathion. Perhaps these pigeons succumbed to the insecticides used so heavily on lawns to rid them of mole crickets. Click this link to learn more about malathion http://www.pesticide.org/malathion.pdf

We could not imagine it being anything else, for the way they seemed to die together.

Once again, the effects of our actions are not often foreseen when our intention is to harm one living creature, but not another. Oh well, just another day in Montserrat? We are very grateful to Susan J. Hewitt who wrote to tell us the common name -- scaly-naped pigeons -- as well as, the Latin name for these beautiful birds -- Patagioenas squamosa Bonnaterre, 1792.
