ACCOMMODATIONS IN MONTSERRAT
Montserrat has a short, but varied list of attractive places to stay ranging from intimate guest houses to small comfortable hotels and private rental homes. All are in the northern safe zone.

Overnight in Antigua:
Because you may arrive in Antigua too late to continue on to Montserrat, here are some choices for an overnight.

Admiral Inn, Nelson Dock Yard
When you are having a forced overnight because of transportation glitches, ask about a room on the top floor as those rooms are less expensive than others at the hotel. Here, you can spend the night and play online casino until you're ready to move on. Such a room will cost at least $100 US dollars a night for a double.

Recommended by: Expatriate residents of Olveston. Residents of Montserrat receive a discount, just ask. The price for a room at this pleasant hotel several years ago was very reasonable. The price has now risen to well over $100/night for a double. The hotel is in the center of the town of St. John's so there is no pool or other Caribbean style amenities you may be looking for. As an overnight on your way to Montserrat it is just fine, if a little expensive.

Dogs and cats are common on most Caribbean islands. Sadly in Montserrat, fighting dogs like pitbull terriers, rottweilers and mastiffs have all become very popular with locals and increasingly with expatriates who have become more concerned with their own security. While these animals are not themselves to blame for their viciousness, their owners are responsible for their control and that is just not happening. In Olveston, walk by Bruce Ferrara's property any time of day or night and you will find yourself frightened by his junk yard dogs throwing themselves at the very inadequate fencing which he originally installed for his very friendly golden retriever. From about 2008 or so, Bruce greatly expanded his business in what had always been the residential neighborhood of Olveston. At that time as well he invested in "junk yard dog" species, walking these beasts himself while carrying a hefty branch to beat them with when they "misbehaved" as in trying to attack another person walking in the road.

Arriving dogs and cats require veterinary certificates issued within 72 hours of travel testifying that the animals are free of contagious diseases. The Veterinary Officer must receive notification of intended arrival 48 hours in advance and animals may be subject to quarantine. Contact the Dept. of Agriculture, P.O. Box 272, Brades, Montserrat.

Sally Simpson, writing under the name Adair Arlen, was born and raised in Chicago, resided later in Carbondale where she was employed at Southern Illinois University. She met her English husband in New Orleans where they spent many happy years and their home is now on the ruggedly beautiful West Indian island of Montserrat in the Caribbean.
Adair has published several magazine articles, is a regular contributor of articles and commentary for a weekly island newspaper, The Montserrat Reporter, and has collaborated with private investigator Bill Price in writing for the textbook, Advanced Forensic Civil Investigations.
She has recently finished writing a sequel to The House of Tomorrow called To Say Goodbye which will soon be in print.
